Hey Zank,

My name is Jesse and I live in Canada. My Dutch best friend and I finally got a month off to go on a motorbike trip to Vietnam this December. We have been wanting to do this trip forever. We are both avid motorbike guys that have gone on long haul trips in the past.

We are thinking of going from Hanoi to Saigon from Dec 15th to Jan 15, since that is supposed to be when the uber rains stop.

My research says that we have to drive around 125cc bikes to avoid police trouble, and probably live given the road conditions.

So far it looks like renting may be an only option, but that sounds kinda sketch to me. I was wondering if you could give us some advice? Did you try to buy some crappy bikes there and got turned away, so you only rented? How was finding gas along the way?

Was there some stuff you WISH you had brought but forgot, such as duct tape?

Any advice will be much appreciated man. I loved reading your blog. Makes me want to go right now!

So glad to see that Melbourne made it on to your top 3 list. It’s up there for me too. We had such a good time that day - what a laugh!
Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy Lisbon too much - being Portuguese and all I am a little biased and think its pretty cool but at least Albufeira is up there with Melbourne. Your trip sounds so amazing!

I concur entirely about the Portuguese people being so friendly.Albufeira nightlife is great along with the Kiss disco and the Strip locality.
A great idea to share the costs of accommodation and there are some really good selfcatering apartments on the Club Albufeira which is just 2 kms from the Old Town Albufeira.Having 3 superb pools each with cafes the chance to unwind from travels is also great.
I booked a one bedroom apartment which sleeps four via the website http://www.holiday-seek.eu which worked out cheap when sharing the costs with others.

Not to cause you any stress– but for the past couple weeks your FCKING RENTER sounds like a herd of elephants jumping around…. every nite aroung 8:30- 12AM!!! yes that late— I hear pounding and running up and down the stairs… SOOOO ANNOYING!!!!!! So finally tonite I go over there– and come to find out — they are praticing Skateboarding moves in your LIVING ROOM!!!! what the fck!!??? Did you know that its a younger kid that lives there?? Yeah– his friends come racing around the corner in their beat up cars… and then go play tricks in your house!!…..

Ahhh… Zank. I guess you never read the Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe (neither did I, for that matter) but isn’t one of the main points of the book… if you are doing extensive traveling, the most important thing you can bring is a towel. hah. Hey Zank, how you doing? I finally made it out of Albufeira on Friday, and was driven to Portimao by the skipper. I started cooking at Al´Face for my room and board on the Thursday. What a riot! Had a great time hanging with you, shame about the waves. How´s the rest of your journey going?
I haven´t got the time just now as duty aboard The Manatee calls. She´s a 56´ double masted, steel hulled beauty, with hot water showers! Should come in handy when we get to the 12 deg weather off the Maritimes.
So stay in touch my friend, had a blast, you´ve now got my contacts. We´re leaving this evening, but probably in the morning, so I won´t be able to respond for about a week, when we arrive in the Azores. Take care.
